If an AI generates the correct hypothesis before you do, whose discovery is it? And what does it mean that a national government — through initiatives like the United States’ Genesis Mission — is now pre-selecting which scientific questions deserve AI-accelerated answers? Does intuition, luck or the “eureka” moment still have a place in an increasingly automated, increasingly state-directed science?
These reflections will form part of the Scientific Discovery in the Era of AI workshop, which is aimed at doctoral students from all scientific disciplines. The workshop is being organised as part of Passion for Knowledge 2026, in collaboration with Euskampus Fundazioa.
The training session will put doctoral students at the heart of the conversation. First, they will meet in small groups to discuss a series of questions and decide together which issues to raise with the two Passion for Knowledge representatives who have been invited to the event.
After a break, the final part will consist of an open dialogue between the students and the speakers. This will create a space for exchange in which the voices and perspectives of young researchers will take centre stage.
