This morning, Passion for Knowledge brought one of its most eagerly awaited events to Bilbao: the ‘Zientziarekin solasean!’ encounter, which brought together students and teachers from schools across the Basque Country with some of the leading international scientists at the Bizkaia Aretoa EHU.
The students had the opportunity to speak directly with Albert Fert, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics; Eva Nogales, winner of the 2023 Shaw Prize in Life Sciences and Medicine; and Marcus du Sautoy, winner of the Royal Society’s 2009 Faraday Prize. In a relaxed and informal atmosphere, the three speakers answered the young people’s questions, sharing their knowledge, experiences and passion for science.
One of the most eagerly awaited moments of the event, moderated by Pedro Miguel Etxenike, came with the announcement of the most interesting and original question, which went to Héctor Lorenzo Vicente, a pupil at the Colegio San Pelayo Ikastetxea in Ermua, for his question: ‘Do you think there will come a time when artificial intelligence will be able to discover a completely new mathematical idea that no human being would ever have been able to imagine?’ The award, presented thanks to the collaboration of Telefónica, a patron of the DIPC, was announced live by Javier Benito, representing Telefónica.
